Elsie and the Tiny Someone
This is a sample story. Every Wispalo story is created fresh, starring your own child.
Elsie wasn't sure what to think when her parents brought home a tiny, squirmy someone who cried more than she expected, wrapped in a soft blanket and making the strangest little snuffling sounds. At first it felt like everyone's attention had floated away from her and landed somewhere new, leaving her standing quietly at the edge of the room.
She watched from the doorway as her mum and dad fussed and cooed over the tiny bundle, and a funny, hollow feeling settled in her chest. Nobody had asked her to help fold the little blankets, or to choose which stuffed animal should sit in the cot.
But then her mum looked up and smiled. "Would you like to hold your baby brother?" she asked gently, patting the cushion beside her on the sofa.
Elsie's heart thudded with a mixture of nerves and excitement as she settled carefully into place, her mum guiding her arms into just the right shape. When the tiny, warm bundle was placed gently into her arms, something warm bloomed in Elsie's chest, chasing the hollow feeling away entirely.
The baby's tiny fingers wrapped around hers, impossibly small and impossibly strong for something so new to the world. Elsie stared down at his scrunched-up, sleepy face, and felt a fierce, sudden rush of love she hadn't expected at all.
She realised, all at once, that she wasn't losing anything — she was gaining someone who would look up to her one day, who would learn to walk by following her footsteps and learn to laugh by copying hers. The thought made her sit up a little straighter, a little prouder.
Elsie started practising being a big sister right away, choosing the softest blanket from the airing cupboard and humming the quietest, gentlest songs she knew. She even helped her mum pick out the tiny socks for his tiny feet, insisting on the ones with stars.
Her dad found her later that evening, still sitting beside the moses basket, watching her new brother sleep with the fierce concentration of someone guarding something precious. "You're going to be a wonderful big sister," he told her, and Elsie beamed.
That night, Elsie fell asleep proud, already dreaming of everything she'd teach her new little sibling — how to build the tallest block towers, how to spot the first star in the sky, and how to feel less wobbly on their own big days, whenever they came.
