Milo and the Shy Star
This is a sample story. Every Wispalo story is created fresh, starring your own child.
Milo's rocket zipped past planets striped like marbles, swirls of orange and blue and violet streaking by his window, until something caught his eye — one small star, twinkling much fainter than all the rest. Curious, he steered his rocket closer.
Up close, the little star seemed to shrink back, its light flickering nervously. "Please don't look too closely," it whispered, its voice small and shaky. "I'm not as impressive as the others."
Milo floated his rocket alongside it gently. "Why do you think that?" he asked, and the star sighed, a tiny shimmer of sparks drifting from its points.
"All the other stars shine so bright and bold," it said. "I've tried, but my light just comes out soft and dim. I don't think anyone even notices me up here."
Milo thought about the nights he'd looked up from his bedroom window, searching the sky for the faintest, gentlest lights. "I notice the small ones," he said softly. "Sometimes the smallest light is the one someone's been looking for the whole time."
The little star seemed to consider this, its flickering slowing into something steadier. "Even the smallest light matters," Milo said again, "especially to someone looking up from very far away."
Slowly, hesitantly, the star began to glow a little bolder — first a soft golden shimmer, then brighter still, until it shone as boldly as any star in the whole sky. Milo grinned, watching it swell with quiet, glittering confidence.
All around them, the other stars began to twinkle in return, tiny silent bursts of light like applause rippling across the galaxy, welcoming their newly confident friend into their glittering ranks. The shy star spun in a slow, delighted circle, trailing sparkles behind it like a comet's tail.
Milo turned his rocket homeward at last, weaving gently between the constellations, the little star's light glowing steadily brighter in his rearview mirror the whole way back. It winked at him once, warm and grateful, before settling into its place among the others.
He touched down softly on his windowsill and climbed into bed, glancing up through his curtains at the night sky one more time, where somewhere among the thousands of stars, one small light twinkled proudly, exactly where it belonged.
