Sam and the Brave Badge
This is a sample story. Every Wispalo story is created fresh, starring your own child.
Sam wasn't looking forward to his check-up, especially the part where the doctor listened to his heartbeat with a cold, silver stethoscope. He'd been thinking about it all week, imagining all sorts of uncomfortable things, and his tummy felt fluttery the whole car ride there.
The waiting room was bright and cheerful, decorated with paintings of smiling animals, but Sam still gripped his mum's hand tightly as they were called through. The doctor, a kind-faced woman with a warm smile, crouched down to his level right away.
"Before we start," she said, "would you like to listen to your own heartbeat first?" Sam blinked, surprised — nobody had offered that before.
She gently placed the stethoscope in his ears, and Sam's eyes went wide as he heard it — his own heart, going thump-thump-thump like a friendly little drum, steady and strong. The nervous fluttering in his tummy eased, just a little, just enough.
The doctor checked his ears next with a funny little torch, then his eyes, asking him to follow her finger as it moved side to side. When she gently tickled the back of his knee with a soft little hammer, his foot kicked out on its own, making him laugh despite himself.
"There we go," she said, laughing along with him. "Everything looks wonderful, Sam. You've been very brave today."
When it was all done, and Sam realised the check-up hadn't been half as scary as he'd imagined, the doctor reached into her drawer and pulled out a shiny sticker — a "Brave Badge," glittering purple and gold, with a big letter B in the middle. She pressed it carefully onto his jumper.
Sam wore it proudly all the way out through the waiting room, showing it off to the receptionist and to a little boy who was waiting nervously for his own turn. He felt a little braver himself just by wearing it.
He wore it proudly all the way home, already feeling less worried about his next visit, already planning to tell his friends at school about the drum-sound his own heart made. That night, he fell asleep with the badge still stuck to his pyjama top, dreaming of drums and dragons and doctors who let you listen to your own brave, steady heart.
