Theo and the Lost Pearl

Underwater Kingdom

This is a sample story. Every Wispalo story is created fresh, starring your own child.

Theo had always wondered what lived beneath the waves, and one night, as he stood at the shoreline in his pyjamas, a friendly seahorse bobbed up and invited him down to find out. A shimmering bubble wrapped gently around him, and before he knew it, he was drifting down, down, down into the blue.

The Underwater Kingdom unfolded below him like a dream — coral castles in pink and gold, schools of fish that glowed like scattered jewels, and soft beams of moonlight filtering through the water like silver thread. Theo laughed with delight, bubbles rising from his lips in a string of tiny pearls.

The seahorse led him to a grand coral palace, where a kind old turtle sat looking rather glum atop her shell-shaped throne. "My favourite pearl has gone missing," she sighed, "the one that's kept our kingdom glowing bright for a hundred years."

Theo offered to help, and the turtle's eyes crinkled with hope. She pointed a flipper toward a swaying kelp forest at the edge of the kingdom, where strange things sometimes drifted and hid. Theo swam bravely into the swaying green, seaweed brushing past his shoulders like gentle fingers.

Deep among the fronds, he found a small clam, clenched tightly shut and trembling. "Hello there," Theo said softly, floating close but not too close. "Are you keeping something safe?"

Slowly, carefully, the shy clam opened just a crack, revealing the missing pearl glowing warm and bright inside. It had found the pearl on the seabed and hidden it away, too frightened of the big kingdom to know how to give it back. Theo spoke gently, telling the little clam there was nothing to fear, and that everyone would be so glad to have it home.

The clam released the pearl into Theo's open palms, and together they swam back through the kelp forest to the coral palace. When the old turtle saw her pearl glowing once more, she clapped her flippers together in delight, and the whole kingdom seemed to shimmer brighter in celebration.

She placed a crown of woven seaweed upon Theo's head and promised that the sea would always remember his kindness, in every wave and every tide. The little clam, no longer shy, waved a small friendly wave from its perch on the turtle's throne.

Theo drifted up toward the surface, wrapped in warm water and the quiet hum of the deep, the seahorse escorting him all the way to the shore. The moon hung soft and low over the water as he climbed out, ready for dry blankets and sleep, the seaweed crown still resting lightly on his hair.

He crawled into bed still smelling faintly of salt and sea breeze, the kingdom's glow lingering warm behind his closed eyes, and drifted off to the gentle, distant hush of waves.
